Usagi Yojimbo #84

Usagi Yojimbo issue 84 was published in 2005 as part of the long-running comic book series created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai. The series follows Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit in late 16th-century Japan, a setting Sakai meticulously researches to balance historical accuracy with anthropomorphic storytelling. By the time this issue was released, the series had established itself as a critical darling, praised for its fluid, clean linework and ability to seamlessly blend political intrigue, folklore, and character-driven drama.

This specific issue continued Sakai’s tradition of self-contained stories and long-form narrative arcs, showcasing his minimalist, brush-heavy aesthetic inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and classic cinema. As an independent creator, Sakai maintained full artistic control over the title, ensuring that the visual language of Usagi remained consistent over decades of publication. The issue was received as another solid entry in the series, maintaining the high standard of composition and pacing that helped the title secure multiple Eisner Awards over its multi-decade run.
