Usagi Yojimbo #97

Usagi Yojimbo #97, published by Dark Horse Comics in 2006, serves as a pivotal installment in Stan Sakai’s long-running epic concerning Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit wandering Edo-period Japan. This issue continues the high-stakes narrative arcs that define the series, blending Sakai’s deep appreciation for Japanese history and chanbara cinema with anthropomorphic character design. The series itself has remained a critical darling for decades, celebrated for its clean, expressive linework and adherence to traditional storytelling sensibilities.

Stan Sakai both writes and illustrates the series, maintaining a singular vision that has garnered significant acclaim within the comic book industry. Issue #97 is notable for its contribution to the serialized storytelling style Sakai refined over the years, where individual issues often function as self-contained vignettes within a larger tapestry. It was received by readers and critics as a testament to the consistency and artistic discipline of the title, which continues to be regarded as a foundational work of independent comics.
