Ushio to Tora Gaiden #1

Ushio to Tora Gaiden was released as a companion series to Kazuhiro Fujita’s long-running supernatural action manga, Ushio and Tora, which originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday between 1990 and 1996. Following the conclusion of the main narrative, Fujita revisited the world of the titular duo to expand upon specific character histories and subplots that could not be fully addressed in the primary arc. The Gaiden, or side-story, issues allowed the author to experiment with different tones and focus on the deeper mythology of the spear-wielding protagonist and his tiger-like companion.

Fujita is noted for his highly kinetic, expressive art style, which is characterized by intense facial distortions and high-contrast ink work that emphasizes the chaotic energy of the supernatural battles. By the time this side-story was released, the series had already cemented itself as a seminal work in the shonen horror-fantasy genre, and the Gaiden series was designed as a thoughtful epilogue for fans who remained invested in the complex relationship between the two main characters. Its reception was largely positive, serving as a testament to the enduring popularity of Fujita's world-building.
