Ushiro no Shōmen Kamui-san #12

Ushiro no Shōmen Kamui-san, illustrated by the manga artist Kiri Kiri, is a surreal and often unsettling series that gained a cult following for its unique fusion of traditional Japanese folklore with modern psychological horror elements. The series was designed to explore themes of isolation and the uncanny, often utilizing stark, high-contrast imagery to build tension within the narrative. Issue number 12 represents a midpoint in the series' serialization, capturing a moment where the creative team began to experiment more heavily with non-linear storytelling and deeper character introspection.

Upon its release, the series was noted for its distinctive visual style, which departed from mainstream shonen aesthetics to embrace a darker, more illustrative approach. Critics and readers alike praised the series for its ability to maintain a consistent sense of dread, though it remained a niche title throughout its run. The design choices, particularly the cover art of issue 12, are emblematic of the era’s trend toward psychological depth in manga, reflecting the author’s intent to challenge the reader's perception of the protagonists' fragile reality.
