Valor #5 was published in 1954 by EC Comics as part of their short-lived adventure line. Following the immense success of their horror and suspense titles, EC publisher William Gaines sought to diversify the company's output by launching a series of historical and mythic adventure comics. This issue, like the others in the series, sought to move away from the sensationalist tone of their earlier work, aiming for a more sophisticated, narrative-driven approach to storytelling that appealed to a broader audience.

The interior art for this period of EC Comics is defined by the high standards of the editorial team, which often featured collaborations from legendary contributors such as Wally Wood or Bernard Krigstein. These creators were focused on anatomical accuracy, cinematic panel layouts, and meticulous ink work, distinguishing EC's aesthetic from the more generic adventure comics of the mid-fifties. While the series was critically respected for its production values and writing quality, it struggled to find a commercial foothold in a crowded market and was discontinued shortly after the establishment of the Comics Code Authority, which fundamentally altered the landscape of independent comic publishing.
