Where it came from
Valor #7 was published in 1955 by EC Comics as part of their short-lived adventure line. Following the industry-wide backlash against horror and crime comics, which led to the creation of the Comics Code Authority, EC publisher William Gaines pivoted toward more historical and adventurous themes. This issue, like others in the series, sought to capture the spirit of classic historical fiction while maintaining the company's trademark high-quality illustrative standards.
The interior art for this period of EC’s history was often handled by a stable of talented contributors who moved between titles such as Two-Fisted Tales and Tales of the Gun. The cover and interior stories for Valor were characterized by a sophisticated, detailed aesthetic designed to appeal to a slightly more mature audience than the typical superhero fare of the era. Despite the artistic craftsmanship, the title failed to find commercial traction, as the market for non-horror EC titles struggled in the restrictive climate of the mid-1950s.
