Where it came from
Vampirella #7 was published in October 1970 by Warren Publishing during the height of the horror comics boom. As part of an anthology-style magazine format, this issue continued the adventures of the eponymous alien vampire, a character conceived by Forrest J. Ackerman and Jim Warren. The title sought to capitalize on the popularity of the Comics Code-defying black-and-white horror magazine format, blending gothic storytelling with the counter-cultural aesthetic of the late 1960s.
The cover art for this specific issue was rendered by Ken Kelly, a protégé of the legendary Frank Frazetta. Kelly’s design leaned heavily into the hyper-stylized, painterly fantasy aesthetic that defined the brand, focusing on high-contrast drama and the character's iconic costume design. The issue is historically noted for its transition period in the series, as the creative team worked to solidify the character's mythology while navigating the shifting landscape of adult-oriented comic magazines.
