Vampirella: Blood Lust #1

Vampirella: Blood Lust #1 was published in 1997 by Harris Comics, emerging during a period when the character was experiencing a significant renaissance in the independent comics market. This prestige format special was crafted to serve as a definitive, high-end showcase for the character, stripping away the camp elements of earlier eras to focus on a more gothic, atmospheric narrative. The project was conceived as a mature reader's exploration of the vampire queen's internal psychology, moving beyond standard superhero tropes to lean into the dark fantasy roots that defined the original Warren Publishing run.

The prestige of the issue was anchored by the work of artist Joe Jusko and writer James Robinson. Jusko, known for his lush, painterly approach to fantasy art, was specifically chosen to provide a definitive visual identity for Vampirella, aiming to elevate the character to a level of painterly grandeur. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by fans and critics alike for its cohesive visual style and the elevated production quality of the prestige format, which successfully revitalized the character's appeal for a modern audience while honoring her late 1960s aesthetic.
