Vault of Evil #19

Vault of Evil #19 was published by Marvel Comics in 1974 as part of the publisher's mid-1970s push into horror anthologies. This series was unique for its content strategy, as it primarily functioned as a reprint vehicle for pre-Comics Code Authority science fiction and suspense stories originally published by Atlas Comics during the 1950s. By repackaging these vintage tales for a new generation, Marvel capitalized on the resurgence of interest in macabre and supernatural storytelling that dominated the bronze age of comics.

The issue features classic, atmospheric cover art and interior narratives that lean heavily into the eerie tone characteristic of 1950s speculative fiction. While the editorial team at Marvel, including Roy Thomas, curated the line to reintroduce these older gems, the stories themselves were the work of mid-century creators like Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and various uncredited illustrators of the Atlas era. The series was well-received by fans of vintage horror, serving as a vital archive for stories that had largely faded from circulation in the decades prior.
