Where it came from
Venom: The Mace #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 1993, emerging during a period of intense popularity for the Venom character. This three-issue limited series was created to capitalize on the character's status as a breakout anti-hero, pairing him with The Mace, a mercenary character created by Chuck Dixon and Flint Henry. The series was designed to fit into the broader expansion of the 'Spider-Man' universe, which saw numerous spin-off titles featuring various symbiotes and associates in the early nineties.
The creative team behind this issue included writer Carl Potts and artist Bill Wylie. They aimed to deliver a gritty, high-action narrative that leaned into the violent aesthetics common to comics of that era. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a commercial vehicle designed to cater to the collector-driven market of the time, characterized by bold, kinetic cover art and the signature dark tone associated with Venom-centric stories.
