Where it came from
Venom: The Mace #2 was published by Marvel Comics in 1993 as the middle installment of a three-part limited series. This miniseries was part of a broader trend in the early 1990s where Marvel capitalized on the immense popularity of the Venom character by launching numerous spin-off titles. The narrative pits Venom against the character Mace, a mercenary working for the government, and reflects the gritty, high-octane aesthetic common to the era's superhero comics.
The creative team for this issue included writer Carl Potts and artist Bill Wylie, who aimed to provide a dark, action-oriented encounter that emphasized the lethal capabilities of both leads. Like many titles from this period, it was designed with a focus on visual impact and character crossover appeal. While it remains a niche piece of 1990s comic book history, it is recognized by collectors as a representative example of the publisher's strategy to expand the Venom mythos through focused, self-contained limited series.
