Where it came from
Video Jack emerged in the late 1980s as part of a niche wave of independent publications dedicated to the burgeoning home video market. Issue number 3 arrived during a period when rental stores and VHS collectors were seeking curated guidance on the rapidly expanding catalog of genre cinema, ranging from cult horror to low-budget action.
The publication utilized a raw, DIY aesthetic common to the era's fanzines, favoring bold, high-contrast layouts and direct, unvarnished reviews. Its design was intended to mirror the grit of the tapes it reviewed, prioritizing accessibility and community discourse over formal journalistic polish. While it remained a fringe artifact within the publishing landscape, it is frequently cited by collectors for its role in chronicling the direct-to-video culture that defined home entertainment history.
