Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #153

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #153 was published in 1968 as part of the long-running Western Publishing comic series, which licensed the popular animated character created by Walter Lantz in 1940. By the late 1960s, these comics were a staple of the Gold Key imprint, focusing on whimsical, episodic adventures that mirrored the chaotic energy of the original theatrical shorts. This era of the series served as a bridge between the Golden Age of animation-based comics and the shifting aesthetics of late-sixties children's media.

The interior art for the Woody Woodpecker comics during this period was often handled by a rotating staff of uncredited artists at Western Publishing, who worked under strict house style guides to ensure brand consistency with Lantz's film studio. These books were primarily designed for the newsstand market and catered to a young audience, favoring bright color palettes and slapstick gags. While not critically heralded as high art at the time, these issues are now collected for their representation of mid-century commercial illustration and the cultural impact of Woody Woodpecker as an enduring icon of American animation.
