Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #155

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 155 was published by Gold Key Comics, an imprint of Western Publishing that held the license to translate the kinetic, chaotic energy of the Lantz animation studio into the print medium. During the mid-twentieth century, Western Publishing dominated the comic book market by adapting popular theatrical shorts into accessible, youth-oriented narratives, providing a consistent outlet for characters like Woody who had already become fixtures of American pop culture through cinema.

The creative team behind these issues generally operated under the studio system common to Western Publishing, where writers and artists worked anonymously to capture the recognizable visual shorthand of the animated characters. These comics were designed to replicate the slapstick, subversive humor of the screen persona while adhering to the constraints of the Comics Code Authority, aiming to offer readers a portable extension of the theatrical experience. While individual creators were rarely credited at the time, the series remains a significant artifact of the mid-century collaborative approach to character licensing.
