Where it came from
Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 156 was published in 1974 as part of the long-running Gold Key Comics series. During this era, the comic books served as a primary medium for keeping the legacy of the theatrical shorts alive for a younger generation, blending the frenetic, slapstick energy of the animated characters with the established visual style of the Gold Key studio artists.
The character Woody Woodpecker was created by Walter Lantz and Ben Hardaway in 1940, evolving from a standard trickster figure into an iconic emblem of mid-century animation. By the time issue 156 reached newsstands, the comic's design remained rooted in the traditional, simplified aesthetics of the theatrical shorts, focusing on approachable layouts and expressive, high-energy illustrations intended for broad accessibility.
