Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #79

Woody Woodpecker #79 was published in 1961 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series dedicated to the Walter Lantz character. During this era, Dell was the dominant publisher of licensed animation comics, providing a home for characters like Woody who had already achieved significant success in theatrical shorts. These issues functioned as affordable entertainment for children, focusing on the manic, mischievous personality that defined the woodpecker's cinematic appearances.

The interior content of these issues typically featured a collaborative effort from the artists and writers within the Western Publishing stable, which produced the comics for Dell. The visual style was designed to mirror the animation models of the Walter Lantz studio, prioritizing clear, kinetic action to match the fast-paced nature of the cartoons. While these titles were aimed at a mass-market juvenile audience, they are now viewed as significant artifacts of mid-century American animation merchandising and the distinct house style of 1960s comic book production.
