Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #81

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #81 was published in 1957 as part of a long-running series under the Dell Comics banner. During this era, Dell held the license for many popular animated properties, focusing on stories that expanded the chaotic, slapstick nature of the characters into the serialized format of the four-color comic book. These issues served as a primary vehicle for maintaining the relevance of theatrical cartoon stars between film releases.

The interior artwork and scripts for this period were often produced by artists within the Western Publishing stable, who were tasked with translating Lantz’s frantic screen personality onto the page. The design prioritized clean, high-contrast layouts typical of mid-century children's comics, aiming to capture the essence of the character’s hallmark laugh and relentless energy. Received largely as lighthearted juvenile entertainment, these comics are now valued primarily by historians of animation and Golden Age publishing.
