Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #82

Woody Woodpecker #82 was published in 1961 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series dedicated to the manic avian character created by Walter Lantz. During this era, Dell was a dominant force in children’s publishing, and their license with Lantz allowed them to adapt the popular theatrical cartoon shorts into a monthly print format. These comics served to maintain the character's presence in the public consciousness between theatrical releases, capturing the slapstick, anarchic spirit of the animations in a static, sequential medium.

The creative direction for these issues often leaned on a stable of studio artists and writers who were tasked with translating the frantic energy of the screen to the page. While specific writer and artist credits for issue #82 are often obscured by the company’s house-style approach to production, the design adhered to the clean, bold, and primary-color aesthetic favored by Dell during the early 1960s. These comics were generally viewed as disposable entertainment for children at the time, though they are now valued by collectors for their historical snapshot of mid-century animation tie-in culture.
