Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker's County Fair #5

Woody Woodpecker's County Fair #5 was published in the early 1950s as part of the Dell Comics line, which held the licensing for Walter Lantz's animated characters. This era represented the golden age of licensed comic books, where characters like Woody Woodpecker were translated from theatrical shorts to print media to capitalize on the immense popularity of the cinematic cartoons. These issues served as colorful, low-cost entertainment for a post-war youth demographic, adhering to the strict editorial standards of the time that favored wholesome, slapstick-driven narratives.

The comic was produced by the Western Publishing house under the Dell imprint, utilizing a rotating stable of artists and writers who specialized in the fluid, manic style of Lantz's animation studio. The design of these issues was intended to mirror the frenetic energy of the screen versions, relying on exaggerated expressions and high-contrast visual gags. While not credited to individual auteurs by name in the printings, the work was a product of the studio's broader character merchandising machine, which aimed to maintain a consistent brand identity across film, television, and print.
