Where it came from
Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man was a short-lived anthology series launched by Marvel Comics in 1999, designed to bridge gaps in Spider-Man's continuity by featuring stories set during various points in his history. Issue number two, published in February 1999, served as the second chapter of a three-part narrative titled The Invasion of the Spider-Slayers, written by J.M. DeMatteis and illustrated by Michael Zulli.
The creative direction for this series leaned into a stylistic departure from standard monthly titles, utilizing a rotating lineup of artistic talent to capture different eras of the character. Michael Zulli's work on this issue was noted for its atmospheric and moody pencils, which sought to emphasize the psychological stakes of the conflict between Peter Parker and the relentless machines created by Spencer Smythe. While the series did not reach long-term mainstream prominence, it remains a appreciated entry for fans of 1990s character-driven Spider-Man lore.
