Where it came from
Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #1 was published in January 1999 as the debut of a monthly anthology series designed to revisit key moments in the history of the wall-crawling hero. The series emerged during a period of transition for Marvel Comics, aiming to provide readers with standalone stories that bridged gaps between earlier classic issues while allowing modern creators to put their own stylistic stamp on established lore.
The debut story, 'Big Top,' was written by J.M. DeMatteis and illustrated by Michael Zulli. DeMatteis sought to capture a reflective, atmospheric tone, focusing on Peter Parker’s internal monologue and personal growth rather than mere spectacle. The art style opted for a more painterly, expressive approach compared to the high-energy action of other Spider-Man titles at the time, garnering attention for its departure from traditional house-style aesthetics.
