Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #7

Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man was a Marvel Comics anthology series launched in 1999 that featured various creative teams telling stories set during different eras of Peter Parker's history. Issue #7 was published in August 1999 and serves as the second chapter of the 'Shadows of the Past' story arc, which explores the complex and often tragic relationship between Spider-Man and his nemesis, Kraven the Hunter. The narrative was written by J.M. DeMatteis, a writer highly regarded for his psychological approach to the character, particularly following his work on the seminal Kraven's Last Hunt.

The issue features pencils by Michael Zulli, whose distinct, illustrative style departed from the standard house aesthetic of late-90s superhero comics. By choosing a more atmospheric and grounded visual tone, the creative team aimed to emphasize the internal turmoil and existential dread experienced by the protagonist. The series was generally well-received by long-term fans for its willingness to experiment with artistic styles and its focus on character-driven, standalone tales that functioned outside the increasingly dense continuity of the main Spider-Man titles at the time.
