Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #8

Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man was a limited-run anthology series launched by Marvel Comics in 1999, designed to provide a platform for creators to tell self-contained, character-focused stories set throughout Spider-Man's history. The series intentionally departed from the interconnected long-form narratives common in other Spider-Man titles of the era, allowing for stylistic experimentation and a focus on the core appeal of the character's early mythology.

Issue #8, published in August 1999, features a narrative written by J.M. DeMatteis with artwork by Michael Zulli. The story is part of a multi-issue arc that explores the psychological depth of Peter Parker's dual identity, a recurring thematic interest for DeMatteis. Zulli's illustrative style provided a distinct, somber aesthetic that stood in contrast to the high-energy house style of contemporary Marvel books, earning praise from readers who favored a more atmospheric and introspective approach to the superhero genre.
