Where it came from
Weird Mystery Tales number 23 was published by DC Comics in 1976 as part of the company's long-running efforts to keep the horror and supernatural anthology format alive during the Bronze Age of comics. Following the decline of the original horror titles in the 1950s due to the Comics Code Authority, publishers like DC re-entered the genre with titles designed to deliver psychological thrills and gothic atmosphere while navigating stricter content regulations.
The issue features cover art and interior work characteristic of the era's house style, emphasizing mood-driven storytelling and suspenseful narratives. These anthologies were typically produced by a rotating team of established industry veterans, focusing on self-contained, twist-driven stories that mirrored the classic structure of EC Comics tales, albeit with the more polished, clean aesthetic favored by DC editors of the mid-1970s.
