Where it came from
Weird War Tales #1 was published by DC Comics in September 1971, marking the debut of a horror-anthology series that bridged the gap between the publisher's popular war comics and the booming interest in supernatural fiction. At the time, the Comics Code Authority had recently relaxed its strict regulations, allowing for more overt portrayals of horror, which encouraged publishers like DC to integrate macabre elements into established genres like military action.
The inaugural issue featured work by industry legends, including cover art by Neal Adams, whose dynamic style helped set the tone for the series' blend of grit and the uncanny. The stories within were designed to subvert traditional war tropes by introducing ghosts, cursed objects, and psychological horrors, ultimately receiving critical attention for its innovative storytelling and its lasting influence on the 'war-horror' niche of the 1970s.
