Where it came from
Weihnachtsgeschichten von Mittéï, or Christmas Stories by Mittéï, represents a charming niche in the Franco-Belgian comics landscape. Jean Mariette, better known by his pseudonym Mittéï, was a prolific illustrator and writer who contributed extensively to Spirou magazine. This series was crafted to capture the warmth and nostalgia of the holiday season, blending traditional Christmas themes with the classic, clean-lined aesthetic characteristic of the Marcinelle school of comics.
The design of these issues reflects Mittéï’s versatility as both a writer and an artist, often showcasing his ability to pivot between humorous gags and more sentimental, atmospheric storytelling. While the series remains a specialized item for collectors of Belgian bande dessinée, it is regarded as a testament to the era's focus on short-form, anthology-style storytelling that provided a festive diversion for readers during the winter months.
