Werewolf by Night #22

Werewolf by Night #22 was published by Marvel Comics in October 1974 during a period when the publisher was leaning heavily into the supernatural and horror genres, buoyed by the relaxation of the Comics Code Authority's restrictions on monsters. This era of the series explored the darker corners of the Marvel Universe, often pitting the protagonist, Jack Russell, against occult threats and ancient curses that blurred the lines between classic monster tropes and traditional superhero storytelling.

The issue features cover art by Gil Kane and interior art by Virgil Redondo, showcasing the dynamic and gritty aesthetic prevalent in mid-seventies Marvel horror titles. Writers such as Doug Moench were instrumental in defining the character's internal struggle with his lycanthropy during this run, creating a tone that prioritized atmospheric tension and psychological torment over straightforward heroics, a stylistic choice that resonated well with readers of the time who sought more complex, brooding narratives.
