Where it came from
Published in April 1989, West Coast Avengers #43 serves as a pivotal entry in the series, famously marking the debut of the Vision's new all-white appearance. Following the character's traumatic dismantling and subsequent resurrection by the government, writer John Byrne chose to strip away his humanity and pigmentation, reflecting a colder, more detached persona. This narrative decision was part of Byrne's wider controversial restructuring of the Vision's history, which reshaped the foundational dynamics between the android and his wife, Scarlet Witch.
The cover art, illustrated by John Byrne, captures the stark transition of the character, emphasizing his newfound emotional void through a minimalist aesthetic. While the series was often overshadowed by the flagship Avengers title, this specific issue is frequently cited by collectors and critics as a turning point for the West Coast team, signaling a shift toward darker, more character-driven storytelling that defined late 1980s Marvel comics.
