Where it came from
Published in May 1989, West Coast Avengers #44 serves as a significant turning point in the Marvel Universe, marking the beginning of the John Byrne era on the title. Byrne took over both writing and art duties, immediately shaking up the team's status quo by orchestrating the dismantling of the android Vision. This issue is best known for the haunting visual of the Vision after he is dismantled and reassembled into a stark, emotionless white shell, a plot development that deeply impacted the character of Scarlet Witch.
The creative direction for this period was rooted in Byrne’s interest in deconstructing established superhero tropes. By stripping the Vision of his humanity and color, Byrne aimed to challenge the emotional stakes of the team's dynamics. The issue was received with significant intrigue by readers at the time, as it set a darker, more analytical tone for the series and initiated the long-form storytelling arcs that defined the West Coast Avengers during the late 1980s.
