X #17

X #17 was published during the mid-1990s as part of the X series, a title that emerged from the creative collaboration between the manga artist collective CLAMP. The series was designed to explore apocalyptic themes and complex moral dilemmas, reflecting a shift in shojo manga toward darker, more intricate narratives during that era. This specific issue continues the series' signature visual style, characterized by detailed, ethereal character designs and heavy use of negative space, which was highly influential in the aesthetic landscape of 1990s Japanese comics.

The reception of the X series was bolstered by CLAMP's meticulous approach to character growth and the deliberate pacing of its supernatural plot. Within the context of the larger narrative, issue 17 serves as a transitional chapter, deepening the ideological divide between the 'Dragons of Heaven' and the 'Dragons of Earth.' The craftsmanship behind this issue underscores the group's transition toward a more cinematic panel structure, a technique that solidified the series' reputation as a landmark work of high-stakes fantasy manga.
