Where it came from
X #2, published by Dark Horse Comics in 1994, emerged during the height of the independent comics boom of the nineties. Created by Steven Grant and illustrated by Doug Mahnke, the series centered on a mysterious, scarred vigilante operating in the gritty, corrupt city of Arcadia. It followed in the tradition of hardboiled, ultra-violent anti-hero narratives that defined the era's darker speculative fiction.
The design of the character, featuring an iconic stylized 'X' mask, was crafted to evoke a sense of anonymity and relentless retribution. Doug Mahnke’s visceral, cinematic art style was instrumental in establishing the book's stark aesthetic, which was received by readers as a bold departure from the more traditional superhero fare of the time, solidifying the title's place as a cult favorite within the Dark Horse lineup.
