Where it came from
X-Factor #17, published by Marvel Comics in 1987, was a significant installment in the original X-Factor series written by Louise Simonson with artwork by Walter Simonson. This issue is best known for its contribution to the Mutant Massacre crossover event, a dark and pivotal narrative that redefined the stakes for mutant-kind in the Marvel Universe during the late 1980s.
The creative team utilized this issue to ground the high-concept superhero action in emotional stakes, focusing on the team's reaction to the trauma inflicted upon the Morlocks. Walter Simonson's dynamic, bold illustration style was instrumental in establishing the visceral tone of the massacre, and the issue remains a noted example of the era's transition toward more serialized, grim storytelling within mainstream comics.
