Where it came from
Published in November 1987, X-Factor #22 was a pivotal moment in the 'Mutant Massacre' crossover event, written by Louise Simonson with artwork by Walt Simonson. The issue is historically significant for featuring the final showdown between the mutant hero Angel and the villain Apocalypse, a confrontation that leads directly to Warren Worthington III’s traumatic amputation of his wings and his eventual transformation into the Horseman of Death.
The design and narrative direction were driven by the Simonsons' desire to fundamentally reshape Angel’s status quo within the Marvel Universe. By stripping away his iconic wings and introducing the darker, metallic-winged persona of Archangel, they created a lasting shift in the character's psychology and aesthetics that defined the title for years. The issue was well-received by fans for its high-stakes drama and the bold decision to embrace darker, more tragic storytelling within the X-Men franchise.
