Where it came from
X-Men Classic #99 was published in September 1994 as part of a long-running Marvel Comics reprint series. The title was designed to repackage significant stories from the 1970s and 1980s era of X-Men, providing contemporary readers with access to Chris Claremont's legendary run while updating the presentation with new cover art and occasional editorial commentary.
This specific issue reprints X-Men #135, a pivotal chapter in the Dark Phoenix Saga. The original narrative, illustrated by John Byrne and Terry Austin, depicts the escalating struggle between the X-Men and the Hellfire Club. The cover art for this reprint was handled by Darick Robertson, who sought to maintain the high-stakes, dramatic tone established by the original creative team while applying a 1990s stylistic sensibility.
