X-Statix #4

X-Statix #4, published by Marvel Comics in 2002, serves as a pivotal installment in the satirical superhero series written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Mike Allred. Born from the transition of the X-Force title, the series was designed to deconstruct the celebrity-obsessed culture of the early 2000s, focusing on a team of mutants who prioritize fame, branding, and media optics over traditional heroics.

Mike Allred’s distinct pop-art aesthetic provided a stark visual contrast to the gritty, hyper-realistic style that dominated mainstream comics at the time. His clean lines and vibrant, retro-inspired palettes were intentional choices to mirror the superficial nature of the characters, who were essentially reality television stars. The series was met with critical acclaim for its dark humor and meta-commentary, solidifying its place as a cult classic that effectively pushed the boundaries of what a superhero comic could critique.
