Xena: Warrior Princess #1

Released in 1997 by Topps Comics, the inaugural issue of Xena: Warrior Princess emerged during the height of the television show's popularity in the late nineties. This comic adaptation aimed to capture the mythic, action-oriented tone of the series, providing fans with supplemental stories that explored the ancient world of Xena and Gabrielle. The project sought to extend the reach of the franchise beyond the screen, tapping into the burgeoning market for television tie-in comics that characterized the era.

The creative direction for the debut issue leaned into the stylized, dramatic aesthetic prevalent in comic books of the mid-1990s. While the series featured various writers and artists throughout its run, the initial launch was designed to translate the chemistry between Xena and her companion Gabrielle into a medium defined by static visual narratives. Reception was largely driven by the show's dedicated fanbase, who valued the expansion of the lore and the opportunity to see the characters depicted in a traditional graphic format.
