Xena: Warrior Princess #4

Released in 1999 as part of the Topps Comics series, Xena: Warrior Princess #4 emerged during the height of the television show's global popularity. The comic was produced under license from Universal Studios, intended to expand upon the mythology established in the hit fantasy series. By this stage in the show's run, the character had become a major pop culture phenomenon, and the publisher aimed to capture the dedicated fan base by translating the episodic, action-oriented nature of the screenplays into a serialized print format.

The creative team for the series typically sought to maintain the visual consistency of the show, often utilizing painted or illustrated covers that mirrored the aesthetic of the production’s promotional photography. The writing during this era leaned into the campy, mythological, and adventurous tone that defined the television program. Upon release, the issue was received primarily by core fans of the series and collectors of licensed media tie-ins, serving as an artifact of the late-nineties boom in cross-platform character merchandising.
