Where it came from
Released in 1997 by Topps Comics, this four-part miniseries was designed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the Xena: Warrior Princess television show during its early seasons. The narrative served as a historical fantasy expansion of the show's lore, placing Xena and Gabrielle in the context of the ancient Olympic Games, a setting that allowed the writers to blend the character's signature action style with mythological storytelling.
The comic featured artwork by artist David Boller and was scripted to maintain the tone of the television series, focusing on the dynamic between the two protagonists. It was marketed primarily to the show's dedicated fan base as a way to bridge the gap between episodes, and it remains a representative example of the late-nineties trend of translating successful fantasy television properties into the medium of comic books.
