Where it came from
Published by Dark Horse Comics in 1998, this one-shot comic arrived during the peak of Xena: Warrior Princess’s cultural dominance in the late 1990s. The issue was created to expand the show's lore by placing the titular character within the mythological setting of the first Olympic Games, bridging the gap between the television series' signature blend of historical revisionism and action-oriented fantasy.
The issue was written by Ian Edginton and illustrated by John Czop, who focused on capturing the kinetic, cinematic energy that defined the television series. The creative team aimed to replicate the chemistry of Xena and Gabrielle's dynamic on the page, successfully translating the show's campy yet earnest tone into the medium of comic books, which were highly sought after by the show's dedicated fanbase during its original broadcast run.
