Where it came from
Yagyū Ninpōchō, or Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls, serves as a manga adaptation of the historical fantasy novel by Fūtarō Yamada. This seventh issue is part of the serialization illustrated by Masaki Segawa, whose distinctive art style emphasizes sharp lines and dramatic character expressions to capture the intense, violent atmosphere of the Edo-period ninja conflict. The series was published in Young Magazine following the success of Segawa’s previous adaptation of Yamada's work, Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls.
The narrative follows the Jūbei Yagyū as he aids seven women in their quest for vengeance against a group of supernatural warriors. Segawa’s design choices reflect a commitment to historical aesthetic accuracy blended with supernatural horror elements, a stylistic decision that garnered praise for revitalizing the classic pulp novel for a modern manga audience. The series is widely regarded as a rigorous exercise in period-accurate visual storytelling within the gekiga tradition.
