Yagyū Ninpōchō, or Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls, originates from the 1959 historical novel by Futaro Yamada. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Masaki Segawa and serialized in Young Magazine starting in 2003, serves as a sequel to the renowned Kouga Ninpou Chou. This installment follows the intense, supernatural clashes of the Yagyū clan during the early Edo period, blending historical fiction with the dark, stylistic action aesthetics that define Segawa's collaboration with the original source material.

The design of this series is characterized by Segawa’s meticulous line work, which emphasizes traditional Japanese woodblock print influences alongside modern manga kineticism. As the eighth issue, it continues the narrative arc of the Seven Spears of Aizu versus the Seven Ninjas of the Yagyū. The series has been recognized for its faithfulness to the tone of Yamada's original literature while providing a visually distinct, gritty interpretation of the ninja genre that bridges the gap between classic chanbara cinema and contemporary seinen manga.
