Yakusho no Shita ni wa Zombie ga Umatteiru #1

Yakusho no Shita ni wa Zombie ga Umatteiru, or There Are Zombies Buried Under the Public Office, originated as a light novel series before transitioning into the manga format represented by this debut volume. The series is part of the survival horror genre prevalent in mid-2010s Japanese media, playing on the anxieties of suburban monotony by introducing supernatural outbreaks into mundane municipal settings. The narrative blends dark humor with visceral horror, reflecting a common trend in Japanese entertainment of the era to subvert bureaucratic tropes through apocalyptic scenarios.

The character designs and illustrations for this volume lean into the character-driven aesthetic common in Shonen and Seinen manga, focusing on expressive facial features and the stark contrast between human protagonists and the decaying aesthetic of the undead. While the series maintains a niche status within the broader landscape of horror manga, it is recognized by enthusiasts for its specific focus on the intersection of professional stagnation and existential dread. It was developed to appeal to readers looking for a cynical, grounded take on the traditional zombie apocalypse formula.
