Where it came from
Spears of Surreality is an action card introduced in the Monarch expansion for the Flesh and Blood trading card game, released by Legend Story Studios in May 2021. The set was designed to explore the conflict between light and shadow within the world of Rathe, focusing heavily on the classes of Warrior, Guardian, Cleric, and Runeblade. As a common card, it serves as a functional piece within the set's mechanical ecosystem, intended to facilitate specific tactical interactions during combat rather than act as a centerpiece collector's item.
The artistic direction for Monarch was spearheaded by Legend Story Studios to evoke a high-fantasy aesthetic consistent with the game’s established lore. The illustrators tasked with creating the cards for this set aimed to visualize the ethereal, often violent nature of the game's arcane combat. Spears of Surreality features imagery that leans into the surrealist themes suggested by its name, utilizing a palette and style meant to ground the card in the visual identity of the Shadow talent, which was a core mechanical pillar introduced alongside the Light talent during this release.
