Where it came from
The Black Phillip Funko Pop, numbered 612 in the Movies series, was released to coincide with the enduring cultural impact of Robert Eggers' 2015 folk-horror film, The Witch. Produced as part of Funko's endeavor to capture iconic figures from contemporary horror cinema, the figurine immortalizes the character of Black Phillip, the goat who serves as the film's manifestation of malevolent supernatural forces. Its design relies on the signature Funko aesthetic, simplifying the goat's ominous, wide-eyed appearance into the brand's trademark oversized head and minimalist features.
The design choice to render such a sinister character in a stylized, collectible format reflects the broader trend of fans seeking physical touchstones for high-concept genre films. Upon its release, the figure was met with enthusiasm from horror aficionados who appreciated the juxtaposition of the character's unsettling nature in the film with the friendly, compact nature of the Pop vinyl format. It remains a recognizable piece for collectors of the horror sub-genre, serving as a playful nod to the breakout star of a historically grounded and critically acclaimed production.
