Where it came from
The Cowardly Lion Funko Pop, numbered 40 in the Pop! Movies line, was released to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz. Funko developed this figure to capture the whimsical yet sentimental nature of the character, choosing a flocked texture to mimic the appearance of a plush costume. It remains one of the more sought-after early releases in the series due to the enduring cultural legacy of the film and the tactile appeal of the fuzzy finish.
The design draws heavily from Bert Lahr's iconic portrayal of the Lion, emphasizing his expressive, weary face and signature mane. By opting for a flocked surface, Funko designers aimed to provide a unique sensory experience that distinguished this piece from standard vinyl figures. At the time of its release, the figure was well-received by collectors who appreciated the commitment to detail in representing such a beloved cinematic character.
