Where it came from
Released to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, this metallic variant of the Cowardly Lion figure pays homage to one of cinema's most enduring characters. The figure captures the aesthetic of Bert Lahr's iconic portrayal, scaled down into the stylized proportions characteristic of the Funko Pop line. It was produced as a specialty edition, utilizing a metallic paint finish to distinguish it from the standard color release.
The design draws heavily on the established visual language of the 1939 production, specifically the elaborate makeup and costume work that defined the Cowardly Lion's appearance. By applying a reflective finish to the molded vinyl, the manufacturers aimed to create a visually striking display piece for collectors of film memorabilia. It reflects the broader trend of anniversary-focused releases within the franchise, catering to fans interested in both the history of the film and the aesthetic evolution of contemporary collectibles.
