Where it came from
The Donatello Pop! figure, designated number 17 in the Retro Toys series, pays homage to the original 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aesthetic. It was released by Funko as part of their broader initiative to celebrate iconic intellectual properties that defined the childhoods of Gen X and Millennial collectors, capturing the distinct look of the Turtles during the height of their global popularity.
The design draws directly from the classic Mirage Studios-inspired character visuals, emphasizing the utilitarian tech-focused nature of Donatello with his signature purple mask and bō staff. Collectors often view this line as a bridge between modern vinyl collecting and nostalgia for the original action figures and animated series, with the figure receiving positive reception for its balance of Funko's signature stylized proportions and the recognizable character traits that defined the turtle inventor.
