Where it came from
The Dong figure, released as number 218 in the Pop! Asia series, draws its inspiration from the traditional Chinese lion dance, an integral part of lunar new year festivities and cultural celebrations. Produced by Funko, the piece is designed to honor the historical significance of these performances, where dancers mimic a lion's movements in elaborate costumes to bring good fortune and drive away evil spirits.
The design aesthetic for the Lion Dance Club series emphasizes a blend of stylized, contemporary vinyl toy trends with the intricate patterns found on traditional lion heads, such as oversized decorative eyes and vibrant, layered fringe. This line was received as a respectful exploration of East Asian folk traditions, targeting collectors who appreciate the fusion of pop culture iconography with regional heritage.
