El Catrin

El Catrin, designated as figure number 84 in the Funko Pop! Icons series, was released as part of a broader collection celebrating Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. The figure draws inspiration from the iconic skeleton figure created by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada in the early 20th century. This satirical etching, originally titled La Calavera Garbancera, served as a commentary on Mexicans who rejected their indigenous culture in favor of European trends, and it eventually became an enduring symbol of Mexican identity and the holiday itself.

Funko’s design team adapted the traditional imagery of the dapper, top-hatted skeleton to fit the brand's signature aesthetic, characterized by large eyes and a stylized, blocky silhouette. The figure was produced to honor the cultural significance of the holiday, aiming to bridge traditional folk art with modern collectible culture. The release was generally well-received by collectors interested in culturally thematic sets, praised for its respectful nod to the artistic heritage of Posada while maintaining the recognizable style that defines the Pop! Icons line.
