Where it came from
Kanegon first appeared in the 1966 Japanese television series Ultra Q, a show produced by Tsuburaya Productions that blended science fiction with folklore. Known as the 'Coin-Eating Monster,' Kanegon was famously created by costume designer Toru Narita, whose aesthetic approach emphasized unique, surreal silhouettes that stood out from traditional monster designs of the era. The character, which was once a greedy boy transformed by his obsession with money, became a cult icon within the Ultra series for his tragic backstory and distinct, zipper-mouthed appearance.
Funko introduced Kanegon as number 35 in the Pop! Television line to celebrate the legacy of the Ultra series. The design team focused on capturing the character's signature bulbous head and mechanical, coin-purse aesthetic while maintaining the standard Pop! vinyl figure styling. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of tokusatsu media who appreciated Funko acknowledging the foundational classics of the Japanese giant monster genre.
